Life in the Iron Mills by Rebecca Harding Davis. It is one of the earliest American realist works. It talks about women and machinization.
Stage 2
Massachusetts state house
The Massachusetts state house fits the organized, contained side of the Chaotic, uncontrollable <-> organized, contained paradigm. The classical influence made it very stately. It was designed for the law which governs the organization of society. It was meant to keep out chaos for the new government for Massachusetts. It is also federal style as a government building which plays in to the organized, contained part of the paradigm. It is meant to be a bastion of government control, efficiency and operation.
Bartleby the Scrivener
As a romantic work, Bartleby the Scrivener is intuitive instead of rational. It follows the Scriveners office who follows the new hire of Bartleby and his descent into depression and desolation because he state that he "would prefer not to" do the work assigned to him. Instead of the rational thing which would be to just do the work for himself to stay afloat, instead he intuitively knows he does not want to do it and so doesn't. Nurturerant earth/female <-> the machine. Women who work in the workforce vs. machines who take over. Women are subjected to machine and industry labor taking away their livelihood. Industrialization made their lives much more difficult. They have to struggle against machines displacing them.
